Part one of an epic fantasy for younger readers: twenty-four scenes across six chapters. In a cold archipelago of thirty-three islands, every thing has a true name, and knowing it gives you power. Yara is twelve when she calls a seal out of the water with a word she has just invented, and fifteen when she reads aloud, to win an argument, the seven words written across a door that has no lock. What comes out does not kill anybody. It eats names — and it leaves the living behind, who no longer know who they are. Ends on a cliffhanger.
